Its been awhile since I have not review a movie, used to do a lot of it back then. Berangan macam student MassComm. Anyway, after done with the last test of the semester during the evening, I decided to pamper myself with a leisure time. In my definition, that can only mean three things: sleep, movie and online (jogging is included, whenever haze is not around).
So I decided to watch The Purge which I downloaded about two days ago. Just a quick share, The Purge was released about three weeks ago in USA and became the #1 for the weekend. With only $3million budget, the movie already gained profit on it opening week with a debut of $30million (that fact alone, lead to download the movie without hesitate). The movie will only be release in Malaysia toward the end of August. So yeah, I got the early screening.
Before watching the entire film, I decided to watch the trailer first to get an insight of the movie first, then I read the reviews but no to the spoiler, won't read it. That's my method in watching a movie.
The trailer.
Here is my thought on the movie. It didn't really scare me to death (didn't get my special #scream award), but it was definitely one of the movie where you giving so much support and enthusiasm towards the character. The last movies that bring the same emotion to me were Orphan (2009) and Obsessed (2009).
Orphan and Obsessed.
I thought the center of the character of this movie is Ethan Hawke but Lena Headey is actually the scene stealer. Max Burkholder's character was a big dumb in this movie, but that's not the only reason why he is not my favorite, the fact that he can't act, making it even worst. The idea for this movie is quite authentic but fail at the execution of the plot with the ridiculous story. [Spoiler] - The last scene where Lena's character knocked the hell out of her neighbor's head on the table was one of the memorable and winning moment in the movie.
When all said and done, this is not a bad movie to begin with. If there is a sequel to this (there's a plan for it), I think it will be wonderful since I can see the movie's plot develop to another side of the other family during the annual Purge's hours.
6/10
p/s: Not a waste of time, at all.
